Taylorsville hosted its first community talent show, “Taylorsville’s Got Talent.” To kick off the evening, Mayor Russ Wall, Senator Michael Waddoups, Senator Karen Mayne, Representative Johnny Anderson, and Representative Wayne Harper sang, “Taking Care of Business,” as a new group – BTO – Bennion Taylorsville Overdrive.

Signing of Worker Classification Bills

Accompanied by bill sponsor Senator Karen Mayne, Governor Gary Herbert ceremonially signed Senator Mayne’s recently passed legislation, SB 11-Worker Classification Coordinated Enforcement, SB 35-Construction Licensees Related Amendments, and SB 191-Workers’ Compensation Coverage Waivers. These three companion bills closed a loophole that allowed some companies to designate workers as “owners,” thereby avoiding paying taxes and other employee-related costs. Senator Mayne engaged numerous government agencies, business entities, and individuals in this effort, garnering their assistance and support. Our community is well served by legislators such as Senator Mayne.

Mayne is alluding to the work force reclassification process of potentially thousands of Utah construction workers as “owners” under the limited liability corporation business model.

Helping My Neighbors

Through the years, it has been my honor to donate to my community. The requests have come from football leagues, soccer teams, scholarships, charities, and many other worthy projects. I financially support my West Side neighbors in building a better place to live. But this year is different… the need is greater for our families on the West Side. The economy has taken a hit and unemployment is high in our state. The requests for financial aid and food pantry services are 50% more this year in my Senate District. I needed to act. I attended the Kearns Town Council, Taylorsville City Council and West Valley City Council meetings, and donated $500.00 to each. The money will be used for their food pantry and helping people with needs in their communities. I’m happy to say, I have partnered with Smith’s Food Stores and Gines Auto Service and they have stepped up with their generous support of our food banks. I will continue to support my community in their good works, but this year we need to help our friends and neighbors though this rocky time.

There will be changes in Kearns

In the states master plan the widening of 5400 South (the main street in Kearns) has always been on the table. Now, the reality is here. I contacted the Department of Transportation for the State of Utah and ask them to attend the Kearns Town Council meeting in December. The Director of Region 2 and his staff came to answer questions and to explain a time line for construction. This project will affect businesses and homeowners between 4000 west and 4800 west, on 5400 south. UDOT will start an environmental study the first of next year. This study is projected to take 3 to 6 months after that, the decision will be made on how to widen the road and which properties will be involved. UDOT has promised to keep the community fully informed on each phase of the operation. Myself and the Town Council will be involved every step of the way, to make sure our citizens are treated fairly. This will be a life change for many people and decisions will have to be made, I will do my best to serve you in this time of change.
